Welcome to the Werra Cycle Route 2012!

The Werra is the eastern headstream of the Weser and its source is located near the Rennsteig in the Thuringian Forest. The course of the River is characterised by the steep valleys which it cuts through the Thuringian Forest, Vorder Rhone and the Weser Uplands. Due to the political situation in the region after World War Two, the entire River was located on the border of the two German states which hindered any economic development other than the extraction of potassium salt. This ensured, however, that the unique natural landscape of the region was preserved. Numerous villages and small towns have been lovingly restored and Wartburg Castle is a World Heritage Site located along the route. The Werra Cycle Route was completely reconstructed and is introducing a slowly growing number of cyclists to the beauty of the region. We hope that you will come and discover the Werra Cycle Route for yourself.
